Can Poor Sleep Affect Sensory Regulation?

For most of my son's life, I would wake up in the night and hear him rocking in his bed upstairs.

He had gone to bed on time. He would be asleep by morning. But somewhere in between, his body couldn't stay settled — couldn't find the rest it needed. And by afternoon, the exhaustion would catch up with him.

I was a pediatric physical therapist. I had spent years helping children move, regulate, and develop. And I still didn't have an answer for what was happening in the room above mine every night.

It wasn't until I found integrative health that things began to shift. When I started addressing his mineral balance and supporting his gut health, something changed. Within a couple of months, he was sleeping through the night. And it wasn't just his sleep — it was everything. More energy. Better eye contact. Less overwhelm with the demands of daily life.

He had carried that disrupted sleep pattern from childhood all the way through high school. And the missing piece wasn't a behavioral strategy. It was his body.

I share this not as a clinical case study — but because I know how many of you have stood in the hallway at 2am listening, wondering, waiting. And because I want you to know: there may be more to the story.

The Sleep Struggle No One Is Talking About

Pediatric sleep problems are incredibly common in children with special needs. Research suggests that anywhere from 40 to 80 percent of children with autism experience significant sleep difficulties — compared to 25 to 40 percent of typically developing children. For children with sensory processing disorder, disrupted sleep is equally prevalent and equally misunderstood.

Most families are told to try sleep hygiene strategies. Consistent bedtime routines. Limiting screens. A calm environment. And those things matter — they genuinely do.

But for many children, those strategies don't move the needle. And the reason may be that the problem isn't behavioral at all. It may be physiological. Natural sleep support for children with autism and sensory differences often requires looking deeper — at the nervous system, the gut, and the body's mineral balance.

The Connection Between Sleep and Sensory Regulation

Here's what I want you to understand: sleep and sensory regulation are not two separate issues. They are deeply, fundamentally connected.

The nervous system is responsible for both. It governs how your child processes sensory input during the day — sound, touch, movement, light. And it governs how their body transitions into and maintains restful sleep at night.

When the nervous system is dysregulated, both suffer.

A child who is sensory-sensitive during the day is often a child whose nervous system cannot downregulate at night. The same system that makes the cafeteria feel overwhelming is the same system that can't settle into deep, restorative sleep.

And here's the part that often gets missed: poor sleep makes sensory sensitivity worse. It's a cycle. A dysregulated nervous system disrupts sleep. Disrupted sleep dysregulates the nervous system further. Day after day, the window of tolerance gets smaller.

What's Actually Driving the Sleep Problem?

When I work with families, I ask questions that don't always come up in a typical pediatric appointment.

Is your child waking at the same time every night? Are they restless, rocking, or stimming in their sleep? Do they struggle to fall asleep even when they're clearly exhausted? Do they wake unrefreshed no matter how many hours they're in bed?

These patterns are signals. And they often point to underlying factors that are worth investigating.

Mineral Imbalances

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for sleep — and one of the most commonly depleted in children with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. It plays a direct role in activating the parasympathetic nervous system, the "rest and digest" state the body needs to fall and stay asleep.

When magnesium is low, the nervous system struggles to downshift. The body stays in a low-grade state of alert even when the child is exhausted. Muscle tension, restlessness, and nighttime waking are all hallmarks of magnesium insufficiency.

Calcium and zinc also play important roles in sleep regulation — and imbalances in these minerals can affect melatonin production and neurotransmitter function in ways that directly disrupt sleep architecture.

Gut Health

Approximately 90 percent of the body's serotonin — the precursor to melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep — is produced in the gut. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, serotonin production is affected. And when serotonin is affected, melatonin is affected. And when melatonin is affected, sleep suffers.

Children with autism and sensory processing disorder have significantly higher rates of gut dysbiosis than the general population. This isn't coincidental. The gut-brain connection is real, it is bidirectional, and it has profound implications for pediatric sleep problems and sensory regulation alike.

My son's sleep didn't shift because I changed his bedtime routine. It shifted because I addressed what was happening in his gut and supported his mineral balance. The body finally had what it needed to do what it was designed to do.

Cortisol and the Stress Response

The body's stress hormone, cortisol, follows a natural rhythm — rising in the morning and tapering through the day so the body can wind down toward sleep. In children with dysregulated nervous systems, this rhythm is often disrupted. Cortisol stays elevated in the evening when it should be dropping, making it physiologically difficult to fall asleep — regardless of how calm the bedtime routine is.

Chronic stress, sensory overload, and gut imbalances all contribute to dysregulated cortisol patterns. Addressing the root cause of that dysregulation can be a significant piece of the sleep puzzle.

Signs That Something More May Be Going On

Every child is different, and I want to be careful not to oversimplify. But here are some patterns worth paying attention to:

  • Difficulty falling asleep despite appearing exhausted

  • Waking at the same time each night

  • Restlessness, rocking, or repetitive movement during sleep

  • Waking unrefreshed or needing significant time to "come online" in the morning

  • Afternoon fatigue or significant mood changes after school

  • Sensory sensitivity that is noticeably worse on poor sleep nights

  • GI symptoms alongside sleep difficulties

  • A child who seems to regulate better on weekends or during lower-demand periods

None of these patterns confirm a specific root cause on their own. But together, they paint a picture worth investigating.

Sleep Support and Sensory Regulation Work Better Together

If your child is in occupational therapy for sensory regulation — that work matters. Sensory integration therapy is valuable, and skilled OTs do remarkable things for children with special needs.

What I'm suggesting is not a replacement for that work. It's a complement to it.

When we support the nervous system at the root level — addressing mineral balance, gut health, and the physiological factors that drive sleep disruption — children often make progress in therapy faster. They hold onto their gains more consistently. Their window of tolerance widens, and the hard work of sensory integration becomes more accessible.

The body and the therapy work better together when the body has what it needs.

What I Wish More Parents Knew

I spent years as a pediatric PT watching children work incredibly hard in therapy. I saw real progress. I also saw children who seemed to plateau — who were doing everything right and still struggling.

I didn't know then what I know now. That the nervous system doesn't exist in a vacuum. That sleep, gut health, mineral balance, and sensory regulation are all part of the same system. That sometimes the missing piece isn't more therapy — it's understanding what the body needs to support the therapy.

My son slept through the night. His energy returned. His eye contact improved. The overwhelm that had colored so much of his daily life began to lift.

That's what's possible when we ask why — and look at the whole child.
